Grr, stupid coal degassification plant comming 10 miles from my house, I hate the thought of a power plant that close, It will use 4,000 gallons of water a minute, and will completely dry out the Hudson Lake water table...GRRRRRRR. GO AWAY!!! They bought the Power Plant that was 1/3rd the way done, and are going to finish it. I'm about to strap myself to a tree, along with a large group of people I got together. How would you feel if this was your town, I want support, please people.
yea that does suck..but you have to look at it this way..it has to go somewhere. If it goes too far out into the country areas, it wont do any good becuase electricity loses voltage as it travels over distances. I would at least try to petition to make sure the environment in the surrounding area is protected, including your water table and air. Coal plants can release very harmful pollutants into the air. Check with your local village hall for the air ordinances or something. There might be a village meeting also in regards to the plant going up and running...a lot of people will most likely be there voicing their concerns. You should try to go that route as well.
I understand both of your concerns for the environment. I don't think that the plant would completely dry up a water table. The plant requires water as its source to produce steam to turn its turbines. Therefore if it dried up the water table, the main source of cooling would be lost. As for Air Pollutants, most coal fired plants have been retrofitted with sulfur dioxide emmision scrubbers. This allows for very low emission levels, and allows for plants to use coal from here in Illinois, which is a great boost to the states economy. There are even some coal plants that burn cleaner than natural gas plants.
By using a coal plant, companies reduce the amount of strain on heating oils as well. One of the major causes in the spike of Natural Gas prices was the fact that the federal government gave huge amounts of money to utilities and energy companies that built Natural Gas fired turbines. The incentives caused a boom in plant production which created a huge demand for natural gas that strained supply, causing a rise in price. Now electricty produced by natural gas is more expensive to the consumer.
I know that for our utility we use coal fired generators as our main with natural gas turbines that only fire under peak conditions. Our natural gas turbines cost more to produce the energy then what we charge for it.
We also have some of the lowest rates in the nation as a result of our reliance on coal fired stacks.

Already did, the towns people didn't want it, but The town leaders do.
