What do they have in common? Remodeling. I don't believe I mentioned this here, so bear with me if I did. Wal-Mart is remodeling stores all over the country. The reason is because they had some decline in business from 2002 because of clean stores, and satisfaction of the company. If you go to the Gurnee store, you will see a new supermarket, but you will see something else very different. There is nothing in the middle of the aisles, and a huge aisle near the registers.
In my opinion, nothing in the middle of the aisles means less sales because there is no impulse buying if you don't put something in front of someone to see. That's why Target doesn't get as much money as Wal-Mart. It's also supposed to be the "up-scale" version of Wal-Mart. If they show Campbells soup in the middle of the aisle at Wal-Mart for $1.25, I might buy it whereas I might not be thinking about going down to the aisle to get it. To, me this is a stupid plan eliminating stuff in the middle of the aisles. Sure, you can make the aisles a little bigger, but in my opinion they shouldn't be taking away middle aisle merchandise.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Burger-Ki ... 1.html?x=0 Burger King wants to make their restaurants more futuristic places to go. They say that men visit Burger King the most, and to avoid them going to Panera Bread, Starbucks (They are worried about Starbucks? Are they nuts? Starbucks has closed a lot of stores because they are doing good.), and some other "trendy" place. To me, the reason why people might be going Panera Bread, and the other place is because people might assume that those places are healther. So, in my opinion they need to look at their menu instead of what the restaurant look like. Sure, there are some Burger Kings that might need an upgrade, but spend so much money on the ones that look fine already, and don't get why.
Mcdonald's has been remodeling their restaurants to look more upscale. Does this change people's opinions about Mcdonald's in general? The ones in Gurnee are the same they were before, but some of them are more upscale. Again, if the place needs it, go ahead and do it, but what's the point if it doesn't look bad? On top of it, than they have a value menu for things a $1, but yet they acting like it's a really richy place. That's just so stupid.
To me, all 3 of these places just need to be good enough. They shouldn't be that dumpy like the Arby's in Waukegan is kind of that way (Well, it's gone now, but it needed remodeling bad.), but they shouldn't be on the scale of Maggiano's in Schaumburg either or even Olive Garden. Why not just in the middle like the Burger King or Subway in Gurnee?

I work at Wally world and yeah, the remodel looks nice, but it is a pain. And you're right, we have more product and less choices.....however, at my store, they created more impulse buying by moving key departments such as Pharmacy and Electronics (The most common destination at Wal-Mart) to opposite sides of the store. That way, people have to go from one side to the other, and stop on the way and look at stuff.
Have a take and don't suck, it's the Jim Rome Show!
Most of the Mcdonald's aren't even being completely remolded. They just take out a chunk of the front counter for the McCafe machine. Maybe paint the wood under the ledge and there ya go.
The Walmart by my house was completely demolished, then they built a new super one. I haven't see any remodeled Walmart's because all of ours are just either getting demolished and turned into a Super Walmart. I can't even imagine them trying to do that with the old one.
Most people won't impulse buy food it seems like. People get what they need usually now. Especially with this whole little wave of healthy eating. However, if you walk through the electronics section, you have end caps LOADED with $5 movies.
They just really started to focus on whats doing good.
Otherwise I think A LOT of these places are just do in for a make-over. You should see some of the dining areas at the places around my house.
The Wal-Mart makeover plan was/is part of a marketing plan. The idea was to create 8 different style of Wal-Mart stores, one for each market. In central Illinois, the stores feel more southern/country. In bigger cities, the idea is to make them more modern.
For the upscale McDonalds, the idea is to compete with Starbucks and other coffee shops. So far it is working for them, but time will tell for how long.
I hate the edgy look of places like Chipotle (I hate that look anywhere). Burger King getting those makeovers just makes it more unattractive to eat in for me.
If you go to the one in Waukegan, that's the Mcdonald's remodeling I'm talking about. I know 3 more that are like that style too. Maybe, there are more, but I haven't been to them. Besides that, there is one in Arlington Heights that they remodeled the outside, and than there is the one by their corporate building that is new. For these remodeled outside, I don't know if they look like the one Waukegan, or those other 3. Those 2 look like this from outside: http://www.flickr.com/photos/puddleboy/3097607851/ (without Ronald balloon.)
Within Gurnee, Libertyville, and Waukegan, you have 4 different styles of Mcdonald's (Rock N Roll, upscale, amusement park, and old fashioned one in Libertyville).

I work at Wally world
Can you explain this?
Idk, it's what all the kiddies call wal-mart.

They modernized the interior of the Libertyville location, lots of wooden accents, LCD TV's, and a big fireplace in the center. I like it.
Not too crazy about the remodeled exteriors on some of these McDonald's, though. They built one by where General Cinema Lakehurst was with the shoebox look, but no ugly yellow arch over the facade. Almost looks like a White Castle.
Not complaining about Walmart except for their crappy new logo. That Gurnee location was a dump until this year. The Round Lake Beach location is set to close this month for a new supercenter just north on 83.
Any more pics of what the new BKs will look like?
Somewhere in Florida a village is missing its idiot. He can be found in Washington D.C.
