Has anybody got a ticket yet from this? I really don't trust these things especially turning right on red when there is no sign. I've seen multiple flashes when people are turning on red right when there is no sign, or no pedestrains in the crossing walk.
Also, sometimes people are anxious and they stop just before the line. However, let's say people see an arrow (People see green arrow for people only turning left, and move a little up, and oops there's a ticket for no reason). You aren't going through the intersection on a red light, but rather moved up a tiny bit, and boom your doomed.
It's an easy way for the city make money. Pure and simple. For IL, they don't even have it effect your driving record which makes no sense if people are actually going through red lights when they shouldn't be (not just inching up to the line on accident).
"I've been staring at the world, waiting. All the trouble and all the pain we're facing. Too much light to be livin' in the dark. Why waste time? We only got one life. Together we can be the CHANGE. So go and let your heart burn bright"
Each ticket is $100 smackers. Soon they will be everywhere and it's gonna hurt the economy more, yeah the city makes like 100 billion a year from this system. If you do get a ticket you can see the video online of your car making the violation.
In most cases, people turning right on red failed to come to a complete stop. If you come to a complete stop, then turn, the camera should not go off. It's the law to do a complete stop for a right on red. No different than a stop sign.
Also, I have yet to see a camera go off for someone inching over the stop line. Plus, in Chicago at least, traffic is so bumper to bumper that the camera is not going to catch your plate. Furthermore, each camera image/video must be reviewed before a ticket can be issued. If you are clearly not running the light, or if it is too difficult to tell if you are in the intersection, they probably won't issue you a ticket.
I do agree that these systems are not for safety. In Chicago, we have had the cameras moved from one intersection to another. Was it because that intersection was SO safe that they didn't need the camera? Or is it because it didn't generate enough revenue?
Also I got out of many of them, as well as toll way tickets and speed van tickets by calling and basically yelling at them. If they have no proof YOU were driving the car and if you fight long enough you can get out of it. It pisses me off when I-DOT tries taking my money so I can drive on there crappy roads when I don't live in the state and I already pay enough high taxes in my own state.
I wonder if that term highway robbery came about because of people paying tolls on the highways. If a lot of accidents are happening because of people going through red lights, the safer solution would be to stall the lights. After the light turns red, automatically within 2 seconds the other light is green. Waiting 7 seconds would be a safer solution for people that are causing accidents, and going through red lights (even though they aren't supposed to). Have longer red lights = less accidents if a lot of accidents are happening because of red lights.
They move the cameras because they aren't getting enough revenue from that traffic intersection.
The problem with our government is that the people don't have enough say. We can say no to red light enforcement cameras going away, but they aren't going to listen. They have too much power. We obey to whatever the government says. If I write into the city to get new street lamps, they might laugh at me because they don't have to listen. They have their agendas. Who decides the stimulus packages the people are getting? We don't. How can you trust the crooks? No matter who you pick, you are doomed. They say no higher taxes, but that's always happens.
People in Chicago are probably always going to pick Mayor Daily because he's Democrat, and Chicago people like Democrats (I wouldn't choose a Republican either.), but look at the parking meters, and the prices. What can people do about those parking meters. They have to pay them no matter what. The city of Chicago knows they can make a fortune off of the working people, and the tourists downtown. Why not charge them a lot of money??
Back to the red light: I know you are supposed to stop before you get to a red light turning right on it, but is that really horrrible if people are going slow through it without actually stopping fully? There was this one car that should have gotten this ticket though going on a certain street (I forget the name of the street) that was in a rush.
They were speeding, and before the light turned green, they were going forward into the intersection. Now, that's the person that deserves a ticket (Revoke their driver's license)! I don't think the people that are going slow turning on red deserve this ticket, or maybe a little past the line stopped.

Just because it flashes doesn't mean you're getting a ticket. The photo is reviewed by MANY people. The person in charge of giving out these tickets for the local P.D. is the last person to see the photo. If it doesn't get thrown out before that of course...
So don't worry if it flashes while you're making the right turn. As long as you followed the rules, you will be fine.
I once pulled out too far turning left thinking I could turn on a regular green light but I could only turn on the arrow. Camera flashed and I backed up right after. Never got a ticket. Same with all the right turn stories.
Honestly? Just stop at the light, and stop freaking out.

^Why don't you tell them to make the arrow for the street the Speedway is on longer (not Grand, but the other one) because that is horrible how short it is.

The Village has no control over the timing of stop lights. All stop lights are operated by IDOT. Also the timing of yellow lights follow federally mandated standards and are based on the posted speed limit of the road. I forget the exact numbers, but I think in a 25mph zone a yellow light can be as little as one second long. 45 zone is like 2-3 seconds, 50 and over is something like 4-5 seconds.
Favorite Wood Coasters: The Voyage, Ravine Flyer II, Thunderhead, Balder Favorite Steel: Voltron Nevera, Steel Vengeance, Expedition GeForce, Olympia Looping Parks visited: 232, Coasters Ridden: Steel: 894, Wood: 179, Total: 1073
I know they suck and shouldnt be around, but the best thing you can do, since they post signs saying they are installed, is to creep at like 20mph before you hit those intersections so you don't have to slam on your brakes when the yellow light hits.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
Just wanted to pass this on from the Village of Gurnee.
