The state owes me $26, and damned if they screw me out of it.
I was astounded when I saw my older brother's. His is in the $500 range. That's only for a summer job.

Same happened to me. That's because the more you make, the higher percentage you pay towards taxes. When withholding taxes, it's assumed that the job will be kept year-round, and the amount you make that week is the amount you'll make every week. So, for example, if you make $5,000 one summer, they'll assume you are going to make $20,000 that year, so a higher percentage is taken out then necessary.
I'm no tax expert, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
